FAQs
What is your Omega-3 Index and why is it interesting to know it?
The Omega-3 Index measures the percentage of omega-3 fatty acids in red blood cells. This is a measure of the percentage of omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA in all your body cells.
It is an important indicator of heart, eye and brain health.
By measuring the Omega-3 Index, you can improve your omega-3 values individually using a dosage recommendation.
Do I really need an Omega-3 Index to figure out my daily dosage?
- No, this is not necessary when a global dosage is sufficient for you. Your dosage depends on your (oily) fish consumption. You can find out by answering a few questions in the product selector.
- Yes, you do need this when you want to know your exact dosage. Then you will need to know your Omega-3 index. With this you can then determine your daily dosage in our tool.
Does every person have approximately the same need for Omega-3 fats?
No, it can vary greatly. A person's needs depend on several factors:
- How much oily fish do you eat?
- Do you have a healthy lifestyle?
- What else is your diet like?
- How much do you weigh?
- Are you male or female?
Does the recommended dosage include the EPA and DHA that I can get through oily fish?
Yes. If you eat 1 herring a week, for example, you may subtract it. 1 herring contains 1500 mg of DHA+EPA. If the tool calculates 1000 mg DHA+EPA per day, then you may subtract 200 mg (because 1500/7 days = 200) and thus you arrive at 800 mg DHA+EPA per day. Thus, you may offset all oily fish (ZMASH*). *salmon, mackerel, anchovy, sardine, herring.
How long must I have used a new dosage before I can measure an improved Omega-3 Index?
It takes 4 months for your body to replace all cell membranes once. So it only makes sense to measure your new status after 4 months or later.
How (scientifically) proven is this tool?
The inventors of this test are a German (prof.) cardiologist and an American (dr.) scientist. They thoroughly explain in this scientific article that a drop of blood is enough to measure your Omega-3 index.
In addition, they explain in many other articles that an Omega-3 index between 8 and 11 is optimal.
Another rough way of determining your dosage is your body weight x 0.15 ml = say 12 ml (about a small tablespoon) of oil of this product (disadvantage is that it does not take into account into account your current status/eating pattern and that we only have this guideline for our full spectrum fish oil).
